Securing a fishing rod to the kayak is one of the first modifications that one can make to really make a kayak ready to take fish. For those that use paddling craft, it is almost a mandatory modification. Even for those who pedal their boat - a way of securing a fishing rod (or 3!) is the first step in making the kayak suitable for trolling or even just gear transportation.

Some kayaks have built in rod holders. There are varying viewpoints as to their utility.

Aftermarket rod holders have an advantage of providing a proper angle for the rod to be trolled effectively, but require drilling holes to secure them correctly, running the risks of introducing leaks if installed improperly.
