• Macquaria australasica

Overview Edit

Endangered best left to go about their business untouched if possible.

Once dominated upper reaches of southern NSW and northern Vic cold water streams and rivers in deeper holes.

Typical (Australian Native) perch body shape, colour varies through degrees of grey depending on habitat, don't usually grow to sizes above 1kg.

Tackle Edit

Sometimes caught as by-catch when targetting Trout in certain streams and rivers.

When hooked, it is obvious these are not a trout, with a lunging fight back to the snag or hole from which they came. Usually stopped on light gear without too many worries. If encountered, try to move on.

Techniques Edit

Best released without handling if possible, but they do handle better than some other native fish such as Murray Cod and Golden Perch.
